Position Description

Position Summary:

The ICU Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for the direct care of critically ill patients using the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing interventions. The nurse coordinates and delivers care in accordance with professional standards, hospital policies, and multidisciplinary guidelines. The RN ensures safe, effective, and compassionate care, responding to actual and potential health problems through health counseling, teaching, and restorative support.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct Patient Care & Coordination

  • Utilize the nursing process to assess the immediate and ongoing needs of critically ill patients and their families.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive, individualized plans of care addressing physical, psychosocial, spiritual, educational, and discharge needs.
  • Deliver high-quality direct care aligned with the medical regimen and evidence-based standards.
  • Supervise care provided by LPNs, RNs on permit, nursing attendants, technicians, and supplemental staff.

Clinical Judgment & Monitoring

  • Continuously evaluate, document, and communicate patient responses to treatment modalities.
  • Ensure timely reassessment following changes in patient condition or diagnosis.
  • Accept accountability for all nursing care delivered and patient outcomes based on clinical judgment.

Care Planning & Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Coordinate the overall plan of care in alignment with medical goals.
  • Prioritize interventions in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Incorporate age-appropriate and population-specific care standards into practice.

Leadership & Supervision

  • Function as Charge Nurse when assigned.
  • Mentor new staff and student nurses as a clinical resource.
  • Provide coverage and support across units to maintain appropriate staffing and care continuity.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Participate in quality improvement (QI) activities and hospital/nursing committees.
  • Attend relevant educational programs and contribute to departmental initiatives.
  • Support and participate in clinical research and pilot projects.
  • Uphold ongoing professional development through certifications and continued education.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Required: BSN from an accredited school of nursing
  • Preferred: Enrollment in or completion of graduate nursing education

Licensure & Certifications:

  • Current RN license in [State]
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications (AHA)
  • AHA Stroke Certification
  • TCAR (Trauma Care After Resuscitation) certification
  • Preferred: CCRN (Critical Care Registered Nurse), TCRN (Trauma Certified Registered Nurse), CRRT certification

Experience:

  • Required: 3–5 years of experience in Level I or II Trauma Center
  • Preferred: Prior ICU experience or trauma-focused RN roles

Technical Competencies:

  • Competent in:
  • CRRT machine operation
  • Ventilator and tracheostomy care
  • Gastrostomy tube care
  • Medication titration
  • Arterial line (A-line) monitoring
  • Proficient in electronic medical records and healthcare technology systems

Skills & Attributes:

  • Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in high-stress, fast-paced environments
  • Team-oriented with a collaborative approach to care
